Kaipi Melaripi Land Development Program

Land is our home, source of life and identity. No land, no life and identity!Away from land is lonesome and eagerness to re-unite from a foreign land is a thought from inside a man who is missing home

Karama Land Development Program (KLDP) is a long term awareness  initiative taken to educate the customary land owners of Karama village and neigbouring Kaipi villages

KLDP's objective ;
  • Educate the people on the Amended ILG Act 2009
  •  Educate the people on the Amended Land Registration Act 2009
  • Educate other Land Laws
  • Educate on other government related policies such as forestry, environment , Oil and Gas Act, and others
  • Secure customary land titles through the ILG Act 2009
  • Register the secured customary land for economic opportunities through Land Registration Act 2009
  • Register the secured customary land for  government basic services such as hospitals, schools and transport infrastructure through LLG
  • Improve the livelihood of the rural population through economic spin offs via land leases
  • Encourage transparency, accountability and responsibility in  land tenure

Karama village is located within the Kaipi Constituency, in the Central Kerema LLG of Kerema District, Gulf Province

Land administration and management in the days of our ancestors were managed through our traditions and customs and were in a communal approach

Today, cash economy has become a big challenge .Unregistered customary land dealings in the form of development had become an individualist approach , usually  undertaken by member of a clan who is influential. Other genuine landowners who are weak and poor are exploited due to lack of information or illiteracy, even worse, threatened and usually marginalized.Benefits from the proceeds of the land use are unequally shared or not at all
